PROFIT FROM EDUCATION

Welcome to this edition of Create Wealth in Nigeria.

For many years, Africa as a whole have relied on Education as a source of Better Living. You go to school, pass examinations, then you can get a good job and live a better live, even help improve the lives of all around you.

Today the same can not be said of education in Africa, with the very high level of unemployment among the educated young people. If we are to realise the benefits of education, we need to go back to the basics and have a clear the definition of education.

One of my best definitions of education is the one found in Wikipedia.com:

"Education in the largest sense is any act or experience that has a formative effect on the mind, character or physical ability of an individual. In its technical sense, education is the process by which society deliberately transmits its accumulated knowledge, skills and values from one generation to another."

From this definition, you will agree that Africa needs to rethink her definition of education by not accepting the basic "can read, can write then educated" perception. Education goes way beyond this.

For it to be education, it has to transform the mind, character and enhance physical ability. This floors the emphasis on paper qualification which only results in the youth obtaining degrees and several other certificates that they cannot defend at work or use for other personal benefits.

In this technology age, it is very easy to investigate and find out how western education is succeeding, especially in the area of encouraging the youth to engage in enterpreneurship. Become employers not employees and destroy the vain and shortlived satisfaction we derive from working for so called big companies instead of thinking of setting up ours.

Life will be better for Africa, we will be able to utilise our wealth of natural resources ourselves or at least be in the driving seat. Most importantly productivity will improve Africa will be great again.
